Thaxted History Project T.H.P.
Thaxted's history spans from the Iron Age to modern times, with its name meaning "the place where reeds for thatching grow". The settlement, a Roman-era site with evidence of a villa, became an Anglo-Saxon agricultural centre before a major 14th-century expansion driven by its thriving cutlery industry, which employed a significant portion of the population. This prosperity is reflected in the town's wealth of listed medieval buildings and the prominent 15th-century Guildhall.
The T.H.P.
Thaxted History Project is a long-term endeavour to research and publish volumes on the major historical milestones in this extraordinary town's unlikely history. Commissioned by the Thaxted Society, the project will be ongoing whilst there remains untold history to reveal.
